Up Your Income!

As an employee, there are only a few ways to increase your income:

  1. Annual increment
  2. Merit increment
  3. Performance Bonus
  4. Real Promotion (not a bigger title with minimal pay increase)

At the rate the economy is going, your increase in the next few years is unlikely to be substantial. If you keep doing what you have always done, you will most likely get what you have always got, and probably lesser too due to inflation.

Thus, if you are serious about increasing your income more than the norm, you will have to do things that are out of the norm.

Your organisation's annual salary budget is fixed, but the distribution is not. To get a bigger share of the budget, simply focus on excelling at work.

To excel at work is more than just doing well at work. It is also about nurturing relations and highlighting your contributions to those that matter.

  1. Up your performance - strive to be the top 10% in your team, and get your name into the promotion list.
  2. Up your connections - strive to be visible and useful to the right people, both internally and externally.
  3. Up your innovation - Simply defined, innovation is "change that adds value". You can take the initiative by solving bigger problems within your domain, quantify your contributions in dollars and cents, and be seen as an asset in the boss's eyes.

When you have done the above well, you have built a solid foundation to a successful career. Even if you are not promoted this year, rest assured opportunities will come to you when you least expect it because your strong personal brand would have spread far and wide.
